The technology is a batch-based process that creates the proper conditions to develop and maintain granules: large, dense particles greater than 200 microns in diameter that perform biological nutrient removal and display exemplary settleability relative to conventional activated sludge. This enables a reduction in footprint up to 75% compared to conventional technologies while efficient aeration at high sludge concentrations and less mechanical equipment result in energy savings up to 50%. Wednesday, June 2nd – 1:30 – 2:00pm John Dyson -- Town's Peak Wet Weather Flow Treatment and Permitting Process Due to climate change and old collection networks many utilities throughout the US are dealing with peak flow conditions that exceed the biological treatment train capacity. Elkhart, IN has been working on the collection network for 10+ years including the addition of storage in the network. As part of the consent decree, the treatment plant would be required from 30 MGD to 60 MGD to handle peak flow conditions but there was not enough room at the facility to achieve this expansion. Alternatives were evaluated to increase the capacity during wet weather conditions. Pile cloth media filtration was selected to be pilot tested on the peak wet weather flows. I first learned what a Biofilter is and how it works, in 1997, just after receiving my undergrad degree. I did both my Master thesis and PhD thesis on the biofiltration process for sewage air treatments. I design, build and maintain Ambio-biofilters for a wide range of air pollution control applications, and offer consulting services in the field. I have worked in a variety of applications in North America including wastewater treatment plants, food processing plants, organics processing facilities, and composting operations for odour control. The simplicity of the underlying principles was taken to mean that anybody could design and build biofilters. The result was that most of these home-made installations did not work well or at all, giving the technology a poor reputation and making it difficult for serious players in the field to sell the technology and their expertise. We believe that biofilters have three major advantages over competing odour control technologies: The underlying principles are known and straightforward; Capital and operating costs are always lower than competing technologies; A properly designed and commissioned biofilter is relatively easy to operate and maintain, with almost no moving parts, and manageable monitoring. We have bucked the recent trend to so-called structured or engineered filter material. Although offering supposedly longer filter life, these products are much more expensive, often more than 10 times the cost of Ambio filter material, require more maintenance and nutrient monitoring, and generally take away from the simplicity and low-cost nature of biofilter design and operation. The material we use is, in fact, structured and engineered in the literal sense, although we always maintain a significant organic component in all applications, as this material has proven itself over the years to simply be the best filter material. We also tailor the filter material to the application and air stream. Our systems are designed to be simple and virtually maintenance free, apart from greasing the fan bearings and changing the filter material every 5 years or so. We guarantee a filter life of 4 or 5 years, but depending on the application, it may be much longer. And this is not based on speculation or extrapolation, but on actual operating experience of over 30 years. There are virtually no odours originating from the wastewater treatment environment that cannot be handled by a properly designed biofilter. Ambio systems tend to be simple, lower cost per cfm of air, and with fewer maintenance requirements than any of our competitors. By B. Shan Shanchayan, Ph.D, P. Daily Checks: Visual checks for leaks Making sure that the pump is audibly running smoothly Weekly Checks: Check pump functions, flow rates, and pressures Monthly Checks: Confirm oil level in gear chamber sight glass is at the half-way mark Confirm oil level in intermediate chamber is at the correct level (covering the top shaft). Confirm intermediate chamber oil is in good condition *If either oil is low, refill as necessary and confirm no leaks*    Every 3 Months: Check the pump, motor, gear reducer, and components for tight fit and possible damage Every 1 Year: Replace pump gear chamber and intermediate chamber oils Every 2 years (or 10,000 hours of operation, whichever comes first): Replaced Nord gear reducer oil Below is Boerger’s approved list of oils that can be safely used with your Boerger Rotary Lobe Pump. It is imperative that only oils specially listed in the chart below (based on specific pump application) be used. If you are new to the Boerger line, welcome! Boerger offers a wide array of products, all with their MIP® (Maintenance In Place) system. These include the Rotary Lobe pumps, Multicrusher, Multichopper, and Rotorrake chopping units. In particular, the Rotary Lobe self priming positive displacement pumps fit many applications. Boerger has over 25 pumps in their BLUEline and ONIXline series range. Boerger’s MIP® design allows for easy maintenance and servicing of the pumps’ wear parts efficiently and easily. Everything from wet end wear parts to oil level checks and replacements can be made without ever removing the pump from its installed system or drive. This ensures repairs can be made quickly with less out of service time, thus lowering repair costs. Boerger pumps utilize a simple two-part mechanical seal that is easily installed and adjusted with the use of a special tool. From our very first meeting in December 2023 to commissioning in August 2025, the project moved from concept to completion in less than two years. Delivering on Performance The PI unit is now eliminating foul air odours at the biosolids loadout facility at the WWTP. This rings especially true with the most longstanding (and original) manufacturer on our line card – The Vaughan Company. Vaughan has a storied history in the development and constant improvement of their Chopper pump technology. For over half a century they have been committed to providing a quality product and the service to back it up. The level of integrity you get with a family owned and operated company like Vaughan is top notch, and that permeates through all levels of the organization. The benefits of a Chopper pump are often most valued in situations replacing existing equipment struggling in a tough application. This retrofit was not only worthwhile economically, with a payback period of less than a year, but it was also simple since the existing guiderails could be re-used and the new pumps easily swapped out with the old. True to it’s agricultural upbringing, the Chopper pump is a workhorse that will keep things moving reliably and will stand the test of time. The Gyro Station pumps were installed over a span of six years as they consistently performed and demonstrated their value. Now they’ve been installed for over a decade and eliminated unplanned servicing at the station. A Vaughan Chopper pump could do the same for you! The idea of a National Day was born during this campaign and grew when its Canadian representatives requested the Canadian federal government seek a coalition of supporters, and people listened. Formally proposed by Canada, on December 19, 2011 the United Nations General Assembly successfully adopted the resolution of recognizing October 11th as the International Day of the Girl Child. Girls around the world face violence, discrimination and lack of access to basic necessities every day. An estimated 130 million girls worldwide do not attend school and one of the major obstacles to an education is the lack of hygiene and sanitation facilities. Many schools have unsafe latrines or unsanitary water supplies, making it impossible for girls to remain in school when they begin to menstruate. The shortage of safe, separate and private sanitation and washing facilities make it nearly impossible for girls to regularly attend school, missing up to 20% of learning time and leading to high drop out numbers. UNICEF facilitates the WASH campaign (water, sanitation, and hygiene) in schools. This program teaches and encourages good hygiene practices which improves learning for all students. When students, especially girls, are taught hygiene skills in school they bring those home to their families and wider community. Schools with clean running water and working toilets qualify for UNICEF Food Programs thus keeping students at school and learning. We encourage you to take this day to pause, listen and learn. https://nctr.ca/ #everychildmatters #### Onsite Insight - "Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself" Salmon Arm WWTP AquaNereda® Pilot Update:  "Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself" I’ll admit, when I first started out as a fresh EIT last year, I was experiencing a definite case of “Impostor Syndrome.” Sure, my mechanical engineering education prepared me somewhat for real life job experiences. But ultimately, I felt like it gave me an engineering vocabulary more than anything else. Salmon Arm WWTP required a solution to expand their plant capacity and opted to pilot the AquaNereda® system by Aqua-Aerobic Systems Inc (AASI). When AASI were having issues getting technicians across the US border into Canada due to COVID-19 restrictions, I volunteered to go to the Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) pilot and help support day to day operations for the remainder of the pilot period. This included sludge testing, influent/effluent testing, sample collection and maintenance on the unit. The fear of being an impostor set in again. All these thoughts raced through my mind - “I’ve never done testing like this before”, “What if I fail?”, “How will I support efforts when I haven’t had prior experience on a unit like this?” Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) Granules 2.0mm Nevertheless, I arrived on site with the little experience I had and the will to see things through. I stayed in close contact with both the AASI Research and Development Engineers and the plant operations team to ensure I was following proper protocol and methods for sludge testing, maintenance, and influent/effluent testing. There was a steep learning curve at first, but after a week or two I began to feel more comfortable and competent completing these activities. Slowly, I started to gain confidence in what I was doing after I saw that my own in-house testing results were within the effluent targets set out in the original design. The last two months have been the highlight of my career so far. I was able to learn about biological processes as it relates to AGS and gain direct operational experience on a AquaNereda® pilot unit. I was impressed with AGS’s robustness, especially when we lost power and feed to the plant for a day. After resuming power/feed, the plant reached a steady state within 24 hrs and was treating wastewater effluent to the pilot’s design protocol. Fortunately, I did not have to deal with operating and maintaining any chemical pumps and equipment since the AquaNereda® process was able to achieve an effluent target TP of 0.5 mg/l biologically. I am grateful to Salmon Arm’s plant operators for fielding my questions and AASI’s team for their support and direction throughout the project. I truly appreciate my senior manager’s - Dave and Dominic - for the opportunity and trusting in my ability to complete the project. By Kevin Richardson, EIT #### Onsite Insight - A Balancing Act Preface The year was 1998, and I was in the final year of my Environmental Engineering Degree at the University of Florida. My class load included ENV4532 - Wastewater System Design, which per the course catalogue was to cover: “Detailed design and layout of gravity wastewater collection systems, pumping facilities, force mains, and a wastewater treatment plant. Emphasis on the preparation of design drawings and estimating costs.” My professor for the course was Dr. John Zoltek Jr., and he had a commanding presence that caught my fleeting collegiate attention. It was during this course that I went on the requisite field trip to the University of Florida Water Reclamation Facility. Suddenly, the mess of piping and tanks laid out on my engineering drawings made sense. Little did I know that these field trips would become one of my favorite things to do in this industry. I learned a lot from that first trip to a wastewater treatment plant, and I have learned something from every site visit since. It is for this reason that I wanted to kick off this “Onsite Insight” blog where I can share some of the lessons learned from going to plants and witnessing some of the real-world challenges that were certainly not covered in the classroom. - Dominic Janssen A Balancing Act My first job out of University was with Aqua-Aerobic Systems in the Applications Engineering Group. I put together Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) designs, and when called upon, would travel to site to perform what were known as a Process Start-ups of newly installed systems. Although an SBR system could consist of anywhere between one and five reactors, the usual system involved a dual reactor set up (aka two reactors alternating duties to treat incoming wastewater). By design, these reactors connected to the same sewer system should act and perform like mirror images of themselves. But, on more than one occasion I would encounter two reactors that differed in MLSS concentration, settling performance and overall appearance of the sludge blanket. The cause and solution to this discrepancy was something Aqua-Aerobic Systems already had a good handle on, but it was my first time dealing with this type of issue. To begin to unravel the problem, you must remember that SBRs run like washing machines. For part of their cycle they are filling with new wastewater. They then move on to treating that batch, followed by settling and subsequent decanting phase. This entire treatment cycle usually takes anywhere between four and six hours depending on the plant’s treatment goals. If a system’s cycle time is set to four hours, then a dual SBR will process a dozen batches of wastewater in a 24-hour day. The problem arises from the fact that not all 24 hours at a wastewater treatment plant are created equal. This SBR system was facing diurnal flow patterns that heavily weighted the plant’s organic load to shorter hourly windows like the one associated with society’s morning rush. Of course, with a perfectly symmetrical 4-hour cycle structure, one reactor in this dual SBR system was going to have one of its fill times coincide with this high load scenario over and over again. Repeating this inequitable feeding distribution is what led to the two very different reactors residing at the same plant. The solution was simple: extend or shorten the set cycle times to create an environment where the reactors would rotate filling duty during the high organic loading windows. This is just one example of what could cause imbalance at a wastewater treatment plant. Imbalances also occur at conventional flow through systems, usually as a result of poor distribution controls (e.g., influent channels, splitter boxes, pump hydraulics, etc.) Obviously, imbalances are undesirable, because it means that your plant is lopsided, and therefore will never be able to operate at its full capacity. The key is to be able to identify the source of your imbalance, and hopefully have a system that can be adjusted to correct the situation. #### Onsite Insight - Always Be Positive! Onsite Insight - Always Be Positive! In industrial settings, selecting the appropriate pump to handle fluids from a pit can be a challenging task. With factors like fluid characteristics, head requirements, and the configuration of the platform and pit, one key design aspect that requires close attention is Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH). NPSH is essential because it defines the pressure required at the pump inlet to avoid cavitation, a phenomenon that can cause significant damage to pump components. The challenge in applications with a platform and pit lies in ensuring that the pump has sufficient NPSH available (NPSHa) to prevent this issue, which is why pump choice is critical. So, what do you do if you have a pit and a platform, and you need to pump from this pit? We recently had the opportunity to team up with Harmony Beef to manage one of their pits where a horizontal chopper pump was initially selected.  While horizontal pumps are popular in many industrial applications, they are often unsuitable for pumping out of pits. The reason is that horizontal pumps generally require more NPSHa than is available in a pit scenario, where the fluid level might be low. Without adequate NPSHa, the horizontal pump risks cavitating, leading to reduced performance and potential premature equipment failure. Therefore, horizontal pumps are not the ideal choice for such setups. In this specific scenario, we made the switch to Vaughan’s Vertical Wet Well pump. Much like a submersible pump, Vaughan’s Vertical Wet Well pumps are designed to eliminate low NPSH conditions since their volute and impeller are submerged in the fluid. However, unlike a submersible pump, Vaughan’s Vertical Wet Well chopper pumps allows for greater draw-down of the pit without the worry of exposed submersible motors overheating. A Vaughan Vertical Wet Well chopper pump provides a robust solution for pit applications, where the fluid may contain fibrous material like cow hair, hooves, and the odd horn as is the case with Harmony Beef . These pumps not only eliminate the concern for insufficient NPSHa but also offer superior solids-handling capabilities, thanks to the chopper technology Other options worth considering include self-priming pumps, submersible pumps, and prime-assist packages. Each pump type has its strengths, but their performance varies based on how they handle NPSH limitations. Self-priming pumps, for instance, offer the advantage of drawing fluid into the pump automatically. However, these pumps can still struggle with NPSHa in deep pits, especially if the suction lift is high. Moreover, their maintenance can be more frequent due to priming issues in demanding conditions. Submersible pumps are another option frequently used for pit applications. These pumps are placed directly into the fluid, eliminating concerns about suction lift. However, maintenance for submersibles can be difficult since the pump must be removed from the pit. Prime-assist packages are a hybrid solution, incorporating automatic priming mechanisms that enable pumps to maintain prime in low-NPSH conditions. These packages are useful for temporary or mobile applications, but in stationary industrial settings, they may not provide the robustness and durability required for continuous operations. Selecting the right pump for platform and pit configurations comes down to understanding the limitations of NPSH and choosing a pump that can perform reliably within those constraints. Vaughan’s vertical wet well chopper pumps offer the ideal solution for such applications, ensuring efficient performance while reducing the risk of cavitation and simplifying maintenance. For industrial settings that require heavy-duty pumping solutions, these pumps are the best choice for ensuring reliability and longevity. And I can guarantee our happy customers at Harmony Beef would also agree! #### Onsite Insight - Good Boy, now sit (settle)! Good Boy, now sit (settle)! Going back to another stand-out of my SBR start-up days, I am reminded of the time I was told to go buy 10 bags of dog food and dump them into the reactor. I got more than a few stares at the checkout counter, but as comical as this was, it was the remedy to a very real problem: Many brand-new wastewater treatment plants regularly suffer from not receiving enough wastewater. The microorganisms being relied upon to treat the wastewater need carbon to build their cell structures and to generate energy. When there’s not enough carbon in the wastewater, you either must run a very long Solids Retention Time (SRT) to maintain a minimum acceptable Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) concentration (above 1g/L), or you must run a very low MLSS to maintain a healthy SRT (between 3 and 15 days for conventional activated sludge). Neither of these compromises leads to good settling, or a well-clarified effluent quality. Feeding your reactor enough carbon allows the system to reach and sustain a minimum mass of microorganisms (MLSS), at an acceptable SRT. One of the main reasons this happens lies in the current approach to municipal infrastructure planning and the design process. Municipalities would ideally want to build a wastewater treatment plant and not have to think about it again for the next 30+ years. They therefore want something that is built with sufficient “safety factor” to account for potential: population growth, higher waste strength, or new industrial contributors. While this conservative approach ensures wastewater treatment plants have plenty of capacity for decades to come, it does not do operators any favors the day after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, when they are made responsible for running a system that could be over 10 times larger than what is needed at current flows. In general, a wastewater treatment plant can start-up at 10-15% of design by adjusting the MLSS and F/M while maintaining a proper SRT. However, if the actual waste load is at or below these levels, supplementing carbon to achieve these conditions may be necessary for some plants during the initial months or even years of operation. In my mind, the best designs for wastewater treatment plants are those that are broken down into phases that span no more than a decade. Designs based around modular technologies allow for budget-friendly flexibility, and expandability. You build what you need in the short term, and you add on extra modules (i.e. reactors) as needed. Another successful phasing approach is to leverage process intensification technologies to augment system capacity. These intensification technologies tend be either “add on” or “drop in” equipment that do not require major civil works to achieve greater capacity. Here are a couple of interesting videos that speak to these two approaches being employed in Europe: Modularity in the Netherlands Process Intensification in the UK While this approach does force a municipality to revisit their wastewater needs every decade, it also ensures that what gets built does not present an operational headache for its first years of existence. By the way, dog food has a less than ideal COD/BOD ratio and can also have potential issues associated with a high fat content, making it not the best choice for an operator trying to solve a carbon deficiency. Plants can also use methanol, ethanol, acetate, acetic acid, glycerol, molasses, and even commercially available proprietary formulations. However, none of these make for as good a story. Someone unfamiliar with the age old battle of pumps and air may think that this impeller must have been made from aluminum, or maybe that it was used to pump gravel for several years. Neither theory could be further from the truth as this impeller is actually from one of the toughest solids handling pumps on the market and was used to pump a pretreated and screened wastewater sludge. The culprit that damaged this hardened steel impeller was none other than… a collection of small air bubbles. They may seem like an unlikely source given the accelerated wear seen in these images, but do not underestimate the wrath of air, water and changes in pressure. There are two methods by which bubbles can defeat steel. The first, and likely better known, is cavitation which is a phenomenon encountered in fluid mechanics, often causing significant damage to pumping systems if left unaddressed. Cavitation is induced by suction pressures falling below the Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHr) reducing the pressure in this zone below the liquid’s vapour pressure. Portions of liquid change to vapour bubbles in the low-pressure suction and then cross into the high-pressure zone of the pump discharge. At this point, the vapour changes back to a liquid, imploding the bubble in a violent transition and, if adjacent to the steel impeller, chipping away a cavity in that surface as well.  This pump, however, was drawing from the bottom of a 5.5-meter-deep tank and using a short run suction line, surely insufficient suction pressure was not the problem. This is where the second method comes in as we were pumping from an aerated tank and drawing from a location which ultimately proved to be too close to one of the air injection nozzles. In this scenario, the already formed air bubbles enter the pump and a percentage make momentary contact with the impeller, oxidizing on the steel and then compressing in the high-pressure zone causing a far less violent collapse, but enough to scour away the weakened, oxidized product (rust) from the impeller surface. Continuous exposure of the impeller to this inconspicuous wear over the course of one year of operation will yield the damage witnessed in the pictures above. Even if the pump seems to operate exactly as hoped initially, the continuous erosion caused by these bubbles can degrade performance over time and lead to premature maintenance requirements or system failure. In the battle between bubbles and steel, it is best to keep steel out of the fight by ensuring that the pump suction is drawn from a suitably bubble-free zone, preserving the strength and integrity of pump internals. Careful design can prevent these types of scenarios from becoming reality but just as important is an attentive maintenance program to work as a second line of defense. For all those problems that could not be predicted or prepared for, regular inspection and maintenance checks will provide the best chance for corrective action to save the day. #### Pilot Project - Salmon Arm WWTP – AquaNereda® Salmon Arm WWTP – AquaNereda®                       Aerobic Granular Sludge System Hello, this is Kevin Richardson, I am a recent Mechanical Engineering grad from UBCO and working in the BC Interior as a Sales Engineer with Waste’n WaterTech. On Tuesday April 13, 2021 I was pumped to be a part of history as I watched the assembly of an Aqua-Aerobic Systems AquaNereda® pilot plant at the Salmon Arm WWTP; the first of its kind in Canada! AquaNereda® is an Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) technology recently selected by Global Water Intelligence (GWI) Magazine as the global breakthrough technology of the decade. Starting fifteen years ago in the Netherlands, AGS technology is now in 80+ plants in 20 countries worldwide. Why Salmon Arm? The City was looking to expand their WWTP capacity and was confronted with looking at developing a new site. The existing plant is a conventional biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge design and the existing site is lacking space for the future expansion. Based on the site selection options evaluation by WSP Engineering and community engagement outcome, it was decided to continue upgrading and expanding the existing wastewater treatment facilities. The AquaNereda® AGS technology was selected for high-level evaluation because this process requires less footprint and allowed for a retrofit within the existing plant area. AquaNereda® AGS technology benefits include: • Small footprint • Reliable and robust process • Continued BNR • Achieving regulatory effluent targets including TP with no chemical addition • Futureproofing more stringent regulatory targets in the years to come • Operation in cold climates WSP and the City chose to pilot the technology in part to ensure operation in colder wastewater temperatures. There are Nereda® plants worldwide that have operated below 10 C, and as low as 8 C (similar to Salmon Arm). It was determined to proceed with the piloting as soon as possible. After an agreement was reached with the City, the earliest a pilot was available and could be onsite was April 13th. Piloting challenges include: • Finding a location that allowed accessing headworks flow to the pilot • Disposing of pilot effluent and sludge • Providing required power • Shipping seed sludge across the border • Sending skilled technicians across the border during COVID • Setting up protocols to replicate various flow conditions. The pilot is now assembled and set up on site. The acclimation process was started on April 15th, including seeding with AGS sludge; the schedule over the next few months is: • Acclimate the seed sludge - for a month • Operate the pilot under annual average flow conditions - for three weeks • Operate the pilot under max month conditions - for a month • Operate the pilot under peak wet weather flows - for a week • Finally, decommission the plant - during the final week I will be on site regularly during these various operational phases and will provide further updates. I am very excited and honoured to be part of this innovative technology so early in my career! Kevin #### Power to the Poo! Power to the Poo! Discussing one’s use of the lavatory is usually frowned upon in polite conversation, however that is slowly changing. Experts in various fields of sustainable energy want you to be excited about using the “loo” for both the environment and your pocket book. Currently wastewater treatment plants consume large amounts of energy, between 1% to 3% of global output. Newer plants utilize between 20 to 45 kWh per population equivalent in treating wastewater, while older plants use much higher amounts of electricity. There is movement afoot to reduce energy usage of plants by way of using our high-energy content fecal sludge to power the treatment plant, instead of sending it to the landfill. In some cases, the result is a self-sustaining plant, a circular economy, with the potential to give back to the energy grid. There are a number of innovative, promising technologies that help treatment plants reach this goal. According to the UN, the average person defecates 500g per day, which could be converted to 50 litres of methane production capable of generating 0.5k WH of electricity or drive an electric car 1.2 km. Multiply this by the human population of Earth and we have an untapped, bountiful energy source. So how do we turn sludge into power? Anaerobic Digestion. An anaerobic digester breaks down organic matter by denying the organic matter oxygen and using bacteria to turn it into raw biogas. Currently, many plants flare off this gas into the atmosphere but when properly collected and upgraded it becomes Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, that can be sold and pumped through existing infrastructure pipelines to be used for electricity, heat or powering vehicles. While using biogas is not new, technology advancements have widened the playing field for use. By investing in wastewater plant technology upgrades, we can protect the environment, diverting sludge from landfills which are large sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, convincing stakeholders to invest in poo has been challenging, it is not however, impossible. Thinking outside the box for uses of human waste will lead to a better tomorrow for everyone. The HeadCell® grit separators give Kamloops STP the ability to reliably capture grit and remove it from the wastewater stream before it makes its way to downstream processes. Coupling the HeadCells® with the OpTeaCup® and GritSnail® units provides the plant with an Advanced Grit Management System and the ability to produce a clean, dry grit that can easily be handled and disposed of. The most recent major headworks upgrade to the Kamloops STP achieved substantial completion in 2014. Since then, the Plant’s existing grit removal system has not performed as expected resulting in uncaptured grit being carried over to downstream processes. Some of the consequences of grit carryover are reduction in process tank volumes, mechanical abrasion and wear to rotating equipment resulting in increased O&M costs. Implementing the innovative HeadCell® along with OpTeaCups® and GritSnail® system will: Minimize unnecessary wear to downstream mechanical equipment. Minimize deposits and accumulations in process tanks. Help produce a clean & dry grit to be hauled away to landfills. The dryer the grit the less the plant will pay in hauling fees. HeadCell® - Advanced Grit Management OpTeaCup® & GritSnail® HeadCell® Stack Tray OpTeaCup® & GritSnail® With the grit challenges facing the Kamloops STP, the HeadCell® stacked tray units along with OpTeaCup® and GritSnail® units were evaluated and selected by the City to move forward with implementation. The Advanced Grit Management System offers numerous advantages over traditional technologies, namely: Best in class capture efficiency and performance backed by independent third-party testing. Guaranteed to capture 95% of all grit 75 micron and larger at the design flow rate. No moving parts in the basin and thus no external power required. Stacked tray design makes it ideal for retrofits since it has a low footprint relative to other technologies. In many applications, existing structures can be used to significantly reduce overall project costs by reducing concrete and construction costs. Can be sized to handle a wide range of flows with less than a foot of headloss. OpTeaCup® outputs less than 20% Volatile Solids when sufficient fixed solids are present in the wastewater influent. GritSnail® is capable of output of 60% Totals Solids and less than 15% Volatile Solids when paired with the OpTeaCup®. This is the first Advanced Grit Management System from Hydro International to be implemented at a large wastewater plant in the BC Interior and will join the ranks of over twenty Hydro International systems installed throughout Western Canada. Given the tight permit requirements coupled with plants running advanced biological processes in the region (BNR, Membranes, etc.), it’s important to evaluate and implement a technology that can stack up to the challenges municipalities face with respect to grit intrusion into treatment plants. By implementing a tested and reliable Advanced Grit Management System, municipalities can better protect their investments in plant infrastructure. We are grateful and excited for the opportunity to work with the City and their engineer/contractor to deliver a successful project. #### Project Announcement - Medicine Hat WTP We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the contract to supply a total of five Boerger Rotary Lobe Pumps (Models FL518 and CL390) for the City of Medicine Hat - Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Residuals Management Facility. These pumps are to ship to site this week, and we are very excited to see these pumps up and running! “The BLUEline rotary lobe pump has been used successfully in different sectors for many years. The high reliability and long service life of the pump convince our customers. The BLUEline rotary lobe pump is available in 21 different sizes. With flow rates between 1 and 6,400 usgpm (1 and 1,440 m³/h), there is always a pump which is perfectly suited to every single application.  Börger Rotary Lobe Pumps are self-priming, valveless, positive displacement pumps. It has had multiple upgrades and expansions to accommodate new technology and predicted water demand until the year 2025. Since April 10, 2023, crews have begun construction on the Residuals Management Facility (RMF) at this City’s WTP. This project “will improve water quality in the South Saskatchewan River by reducing the amount of bound chemical solids from the treatment process released into the river. Water treatment residuals are particulate solids combined with chemicals generated in the normal course of treating and disinfecting potable water at a water treatment plant. As part of its Approval to Operate a Water Treatment Plant issued by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA), the City is required to construct a Residuals Management Facility that would limit the amount of solids discharged into the river to below 25 milligrams per litre of total suspended solids (TSS) by the end of 2024. This is a phased requirement of all treatment plants in Alberta to sustainably preserve our natural water resources. The facility will thicken and dewater the solids after they have been removed through the water treatment process and prepare them for transport to the landfill rather than return them to the river.” Source: http://medicinehat.ca https://www.watertech.ca/pumping/ #### Project Announcement - Sicamous WWTP AquaDisk Project Announcement - Sicamous WWTP  AquaDisk Cloth Media Filtration In November 2020, the Sicamous WWTP Operations team approached Waste’n WaterTech (WWT) to find a solution to lower their effluent total phosphorus (TP). The plant was not consistently meeting their TP limit of 1 mg/l, especially during a 6 - 8 week period in the summer. During this time, the wastewater from the region’s houseboats shocks the plant weekly resulting in effluent TP levels often reaching 5-7 mg/l. WWT, along with our partner, Aqua-Aerobic Systems Inc. (AASI) worked collaboratively with the plant to assess the problem and came up with a design for a 4-disk AquaDisk Cloth Media Filter with 5 micron cloth media to meet the plant's effluent permit. Project execution is on schedule with targeted delivery and installation of the AquaDisk Cloth Media Filter in June 2021…. just in time for the summer houseboat season! #### Project Award - City of Winnipeg - NEWPCC Headworks Project Award - City of Winnipeg - NEWPCC Headworks The City of Winnipeg has broken ground on their $272 million Headworks Facility project at the North End Water Pollution Control Centre (NEWPCC) which is phase 1 of the 3-part plant upgrade. The Red River Solutions partnership was awarded the Design Build contract for the Headworks upgrade and Waste’n WaterTech was happy to play our part in supplying key pieces of process equipment. This facility will be the City of Winnipeg’s second plant to employ both FSM perforated plate filterscreens and Hydro International grit removal. The majority of water from the city is treated by the North End plant and there are rising concerns over the safety of Lake Winnipeg where the wastewater from the city ultimately ends up. The goal to effectively clean prior to discharge and to have the capacity for future loads was at risk due to material cost escalations and delays during COVID. Innovative solutions were needed to keep the project on track and on budget. We were able to reduce the number of required screens by 20% through the use of the alpha-beta dual angle FSM filterscreens which nearly doubles the screen surface area below the water level. Grit washing and dewatering was also a concern as the City has very high standards for the final product and so Hydro International enlisted their largest lineup of GritCleanse units at an impressive 10’ diameter. This equipment accomplishes both washing and dewatering producing a final grit that is >90% total solids and <5% organic content which exceeds the City’s requirements. The final stroke of cost saving ingenuity was the addition of JDV’s Level LODOR bin covers and distribution system. This solution distributes solids to fully utilize each bin reducing the number of trucks going to the landfill. Additionally and more importantly, the cover provides a means to contain the odorous gases coming off the waste solids which allowed for a smaller odour treatment system. The size, challenges and Design Build style of this project created both an opportunity and a necessity for innovation which we will help bring to life throughout the execution of this project. #### Project Completion - Chestermere Lift Station 13 Project Completion - Chestermere Lift Station 13 A Breath of Fresh Air for Your Collection System! In the summer of 2018, the City of Chestermere, AB commissioned their new Lift Station 13 to pump sewage to the Bonnybrook wastewater treatment plant in Calgary and relieve pressure on their already overloaded sanitary sewer system. A new challenge emerged when the lift station was brought online due to the 5.5 kilometers the sewage had to travel to Calgary’s collection system tie-in. When sewage spends a long time in a transfer pipe, conditions can go anaerobic and large amounts of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) can be formed, leading to odour and corrosion concerns. BlueInGreen’s super-saturated dissolved oxygen collection system (SDOX-CS®) solves this issue by taking a side-stream from the lift station wet well and supersaturating it with Oxygen. This supersaturated side stream is then returned to the sewer force main where it supplies enough residual oxygen to avoid unwanted anaerobic conditions. As part of this project, BlueInGreen embarked on a 12-month demonstration trial by sending one of their containerized SDOX-CS® units to site. During this trial, the oxygen supplied by the SDOX-CS® unit was able to keep the H2S levels down to an average of just over 1 ppm, when historical H2S peaks of over 180ppm had been recorded before bringing the SDOX-CS® unit online. The trial concluded successfully in December 2021, and led to the client making a capital purchase of the onsite unit. For more information, please contact us today. #### Project Completion - City of Winnipeg SEWPCC Project Completion - City of Winnipeg SEWPCC The South End Water Pollution Control Centre (SEWPCC) is the City of Winnipeg’s second largest treatment plant, providing approximately 20% of the City’s sewage treatment. The City has just invested over $180M to both increase the plant's capacity to 420 MLD, and to enable the plant to perform Biological Nutrient Removal. The selected biological process is an Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) process that employs plastic media as a substrate to grow a biofilm to help treat the wastewater. This technology requires perforated retention screens installed in the IFAS zones to avoid media loss. Without proper headworks screening, these media retention screens would quickly become blinded by the type of debris commonly found in municipal wastewater.  The City needed to find the right balance between high screenings capture efficiency to protect their IFAS process, and high hydraulic capacity to handle the projected peak flow events. Waste'n WaterTech is proud to announce that the SAVECO/FSM screening system installed at the SEWPCC is now commissioned and fully operational. Each of the four FSM 6mm perforated plate FilterScreens is capable of handling 140 MLD and capture 85% of all incoming debris. This is the highest, independently certified, Screenings Capture Ratio in the industry for 6mm perforated plate screens. The wet screenings then get deposited into an overhead sluice which uses water to convey them nearly 40m to the screenings washing/compacting process located in an adjoining room. Here, the wet screenings get deposited into either of the two duplex FSM Wash presses that have been sized to handle both the high volume of screenings as well as the high volume of sluice water. The washed and compacted screenings drop through chutes in the floor to the bins located below, and are hauled off to the landfill. #### Project Completion - Gimli WWTP Neutralox Photoionization Unit Project Completion Gimli WWTP Neutralox Photoionization Unit - 2021 Birchtree Consulting, Alliance Engineering and KGS Group were looking to find solutions to the extreme H2S levels that the RM of Gimli, MB regularly experienced coming from their headworks and SBR tanks at their wastewater treatment plant. They came to Waste'n WaterTech to take on the challenge and with the help of the Neutralox Photoionization Technology, installed a system capable of removing over 99% of the H2S emanating from these process areas even when peak concentrations reached 150 ppm. The Photoionization Unit was put into operation in early March 2021 and underwent independent third-party testing to confirm it met the specified performance requirements. This testing confirmed that the Hydrogen Sulfide levels coming out of the Photoionization Unit were non-detectable even when the incoming Hydrogen Sulfide concentrations were well above the expected incoming values. Gimli, located on the West Side of Lake Winnipeg, was first settled by immigrants from Iceland, who arrived in the area in 1875.   Gimli means "heavenly abode" or "home of the Gods" in Icelandic .  Gimli harbour is the largest on Lake Winnipeg, constructed in 1898 with the first permanent dock in 1900.  It is home to a Canadian Coast Guard station and their ship, the CCGA Vakta.   It is famous for the Gimli Glider, an Air Canada 767 plane that glided in for a landing when it ran out of fuel over Southern Manitoba in 1983.  Held since 1932, the yearly Gimli Icelandic Festival, attracts thousands the first weekend in August.  Known as a tourist and vacation area, Gimli welcomes you to enjoy the beaches, sailing and fishing. The Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants are located on the site of the former Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) training base.  Thousands of young pilots trained here including our Founder/Chairman Dave Van Vliet's father, Flight Lieutenant Rocky Van Vliet.  He is seen below with the RCAF Golden Hawks and with a CF 104 Starfighter; he successfully ejected out of one over France in 1964! #### Project Completion - Lethbridge WWTP Headworks Upgrade Lethbridge WWTP Primary and Preliminary Treatment Upgrade Waste’n WaterTech is proud to announce completion of our scope of supply and services for the Lethbridge WWTP Primary and Preliminary Treatment Upgrade. Working with Maple Reinders, we were responsible for the supply of most of the process equipment in the newly constructed 160 MLD headworks building. This included the following equipment from our vendors: • Hydro International – Two Headcells, two SlurryCups, and two Grit Snails for grit handling. • Vaughan Company – Two horizontal chopper pumps for primary scum as well as two submersible chopper pumps used as sump pumps in the headworks building. • SAVECO – Three FSM Multi-Rake bar screens and screening wash presses for influent handling. • Boerger LLC – Two rotary lobe pumps for primary sludge transfer. • JDV Equipment– Six screw conveyors as well as a solids hopper for moving the screenings and grit to disposal bins. This equipment has been operating since March 2020. #### Project Completion - Maple Leaf Foods - Jet Mixing Pumps and Nozzles Project Completion - Maple Leaf Foods - Jet Mixing Pumps and Nozzles Waste’n WaterTech is pleased to announce the completion of two (2) Vaughan jet mixing systems at the Maple Leaf Foods wastewater pretreatment facility located in Winnipeg, MB. One system will keep the contents of an EQ tank blended and ready for transfer. The second system will handle the DAF scum and sludge both as a recirculation system as well as performing pump out duties when connected for truck offloading. Vaughan’s stand-out reliability and performance has made these an easy choice for the engineer as Maple Leaf has several Vaughan installations and continues to return as a satisfied customer. The pumps were professionally installed and commissioned by ABCO Supply & Service Ltd, the contractor on the job, and Waste’n WaterTech supplied a technician to assist in the smooth start-up of both pumps. These mixing systems will be keeping unpredictable industrial wastewater in suspension as well as conditioning the slurry for easier handling by downstream pumps. Vaughan’s Chopper pumps specialize in handling troublesome solids but combined with the mixing nozzle, they are also preventing the accumulation of scum and floatables at the surface of the tanks that are just as likely to cause issues for the transfer pumps. Vaughan chopper pump and nozzle assemblies can effectively replace a variety of mixing, pumping and solids processing equipment with a well-established list of installations in a variety of industries to back it up. #### Project Completion - Mountain View Poultry Another Vaughan Success Story! At the end of 2019, we were approached by Mountain View Poultry in Okotoks. They had a problem with their existing pump that handled wastewater from chicken processing. The small submersible grinder pump appeared to be having issues handling the odd feather that would get in the system. On top of that, the submersible motors were routinely leaking and failing. Since the pump was submersible, any motor issue constituted a major repair or replacement. After years of issues, Mountain View Poultry was ready for an upgrade. Based on the customer’s concerns and preferences, we suggested a Vaughan Vertical Wet Well Chopper Pump. Unlike grinder pumps, Vaughan’s Chopper pumps use a clean scissor action to rend the incoming solids. For fibrous objects like chicken feathers, this has the benefit of preventing buildup inside the pump. Build up can increase the power load and lead to premature wear in both the motor and the pump. The switch from submersible to vertical wet well meant that potential motor issues are more easily addressed, since the motor no longer needs to be watertight and can be repaired or replaced locally. Since this would be operating outdoors during harsh Alberta winters, we also offered the pump with a below deck discharge so that the water could stay underground to prevent freezing, as well as space heaters in the motor which keep it warm enough to avoid condensation buildups when the temperature drops. The pump has been in operation for over six months and there have been no problems with feathers. Mountain View Poultry is very happy with their Vaughan Chopper Pump and are in discussions with us to replace other pumps in the plant. #### Project Completion - Poplar Hill First Nation Project Completion - Poplar Hill First Nation Pump Replacement to a Remote Community During a Pandemic For Northern and First Nations communities, the reliability of essential services and their associated equipment is critical. The selection of something as relatively small as a wastewater pump comes with a litany of factors and considerations. Replacements must be shipped during ice road season, Spare parts have drastically extended lead times and more expensive shipping, Technicians are stretched thin over a vast region and training of these technicians on specialized components is not always possible. The Poplar Hill First Nation selected the Vaughan chopper pump back in the 1980’s for its reliability, ability to handle unexpected solids and low maintenance requirements. Now, approximately 40 years later, they needed to replace those pumps and satisfied with the robust performance of those decades-old chopper pumps, the band returned to the brand they trusted for new Vaughan chopper pumps. Working with the operators at the Keewaytinook okimakanak/northern chiefs council, we were able to get these pumps ordered in time to make the 2022 ice road season amid COVID supply chain troubles. We trust the customer is as satisfied with these pumps as they were with the originals, and we look forward to hearing from them again in the next 40 years. Photo credit: Mr. Jim Priebe, School Principal #### Project Completion - Saanich Peninsula WWTP Project Completion CRD Saanich Peninsula WWTP - Fournier Rotary Press Upgrade The Saanich Peninsula WWTP is a secondary treatment plant that commenced operation in 2000. Located on Vancouver Island just outside of Victoria BC, the WWTP is owned and operated by the Capital Regional District (CRD). The original plant design included a four channel Fournier Rotary Press for dewatering a blend of primary and secondary sludge. This original Rotary Press system operated well and reliably with minimal maintenance requirements for over 20 years. The Rotary Press technology is simple – sludge is fed at low pressure into the channel between two parallel revolving stainless steel chrome plated filtering elements. As free water passes through the screens, the sludge continues to dewater as it travels around the channel. The flocculated sludge builds up solids until enough pressure is generated against the outlet restrictor arm. The frictional force of the slow-moving filtering elements, coupled with controlled outlet restriction, generates enough back pressure to dewater the remaining solids, resulting in the extrusion of a very dry cake. Rotary Press Process Schematic Image Since 2000 there have been several design advancements of the Rotary Press; two notable improvements of the most recent Optimum-CV model include: Change from 48" channel diameter to 36" channel diameter while maintaining the same filtration surface. Improved cake discharge. Named the CV outlet, this new outlet design has a vertical restrictor on the cake outlet, improving extrusion and dryness. In 2019 the CRD began to explore replacement options for their Rotary Press, not only since it was nearing it’s end of life, but also to accommodate a need for increased dewatering capacity while striving to improve cake dryness. This study into dewatering options considered a variety of different technologies, including the Rotary Press. From this, the Rotary Press technology was chosen as the recommended replacement option. Further, Fournier was chosen as the equipment supplier through an RFP process and triple bottom line evaluation. The Rotary Press has a modular, expandable design that can accommodate up to eight channels on a single unit. For the SPWWTP, options ranging from 4 to 8 channels were considered and a 6-channel unit was settled on as the right size for this expansion. New 6-channel Rotary Press installation at SPWWTP The new Rotary Press system was installed in late 2021 and commissioned in early 2022. The new unit was installed in a different location than the old RP such that the existing unit could continue to run while the new one was installed and commissioned, making for a smoother transition. The new Rotary Press system has increased dewatering capacity by 40%. Overall performance has improved, allowing the CRD to feed a higher ratio of secondary to primary sludge than previously possible, all while producing a higher cake dryness than previously achieved, and saving money on biosolids hauling costs. Cake discharge at SPWWTP #### Project Completion - Selkirk WWTP Screens & Grit Removal Project Completion - Selkirk WWTP Screens & Grit Removal Once the City of Selkirk identified they were going to build their new wastewater treatment plant around Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, they knew they needed to equip their headworks building with the best screening and grit removal technologies available. Waste'n WaterTech was able to work with AECOM early in the design process to come up with a design that was both robust and highly efficient, even at the expected 36 MLD peak flows. The result is a state-of-the-art headworks consisting of: • Two FSM 6mm bar screens with associated wash presses • Two SAVI 1mm Flo-Drum screens providing industry leading 92% Screenings Capture Ratio • One 12ft diameter, 9-tray Hydro International Headcell providing industry leading 95% capture rate of all grit greater than 75 micron • One Teacup-Grit Snail washing-dewatering unit delivering dewatered grit consisting of greater than 60% solids, and less than 20% organics content An Investment in headworks equipment is about protecting critical, and sometimes expensive downstream processes. The City of Selkirk will reap the benefits of their foresight for years to come! #### Project Update - City of Lethbridge WTP Lethbridge WTP Residuals Management Upgrades - Improves its Environmental Impact Waste’n WaterTech is proud to have been involved in the City of Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant Residuals Management Upgrade where three 8-channel Fournier Rotary Presses were installed and commissioned in March of 2020 to dewater up to 1,000 dry kilograms per hour of waste residuals generated by the plant, thus avoiding these being discharged back into the river. The Fournier units are being fed sludge by three of our PL300 Boerger Rotary Lobe Pumps. It was a pleasure working with Maple Reinders, MPE, and The City of Lethbridge on this project. To read more on these improvements please visit here. #### Project Update - Sicamous WWTP Project Update - Keeping Houseboat Season Afloat Sicamous is situated on beautiful Shuswap Lake in the interior of British Columbia and is known as the “Houseboat Capital of Canada”. Over the years, houseboat activity on the lake has caused increased Total Phosphorous (TP) loading at the local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Houseboats offload their septic tanks, typically on weekends, into the collection system. This heavily concentrated influent puts stress on the existing WWTP’s ability to process phosphorus effectively. The plant reached out to Waste’n WaterTech to help them find a solution to meet their effluent objective TP of <1. Operations staff provided us with sample data showing TP levels in the range of 4-8 mg/L, higher than their current plant process could deal with given the constraints of a lagoon treatment system. The data confirmed the effluent dissolved phosphorus was low and that they were dealing with mostly particulate phosphorus. We approached Aqua-Aerobic Systems with the sample data provided by the plant. After analyzing the data and conducting a needs assessment, they determined their Cloth Media Disk Filter Technology was an appropriate fit given the data showed high amounts of particulate phosphorus in the influent stream. The CMF technology is designed and engineered for stringent low total phosphorus applications. The cloth media consists of thousands of hair-like fibers that intercept and trap solids particles in the influent stream. These particles are stored in the cloth media until they are removed by using a backwash process step. The District of Sicamous officially started up their four-disk AquaDisk® filters on April 7/22 with the assistance of an on-site Aqua-Aerobic Systems Field Technician. The technician guided the contractor and operations staff through the nuances of start-up and performed a field checkout to ensure the unit was installed properly. The AquaDisk® filter was tested using clean water to ensure that the filter and ancillary equipment were working adequately prior to running influent through the system. The filter is now receiving influent flow from the plant. In the coming summer months flows to the unit will be increased. When flows have reached the units design parameters, sampling of the influent and effluent will commence. Vaughan’s Chopper Pumps utilize a very simple and straightforward means of making adjustments. For instance, the upper cutter to impeller and cutter bar to impeller clearances are to be checked annually. Adjustment is accomplished by loosening the external clamp bolts on the bearing housing, and turning in the external adjustment sleeves until resistance is felt. Once resistance is felt, turn the external adjustment sleeve in the reverse direction one flat and if resistance is no longer felt, the upper cutter to impeller clearance has been set. The process to set the cutter bar to impeller is nearly identical, except this time we reverse rotate the external adjustment sleeves located on the pump casing two flats after feeling resistance. This will achieve proper clearance for all 3-6” HE series Chopper Pumps. Vaughan utilizes a flushless oil filled mechanical seal that requires oil level checks once per month. Access to the oil fill inspection port is easily gained by means of rotating aside an external guard plate. Bearing housing oil inspection can be performed by yet another external device – an oil sight glass. This makes oil quality and level inspection a breeze without ever having to open up any port on the bearing housing. Finally, motor greasing is to be checked semi-annually. Grease can be added to the motor via means of a grease fitting installed on the exterior of the motor. *Grease quantity varies by motor frame size. When humans transitioned into community living, keeping your living space separate from your bathroom space was an important rule to learn. We can thank early scientists who were curious about how diseases spread and whether hygiene could play a part. One such person was, Dr. John Snow, known as the Father of Epidemiology. In 1854 he tested both disease-stricken and disease-free households in Soho, London, UK to track a deadly cholera outbreak. He was able to narrow the source to a sewage contaminated water pump on Broad Street. As science advanced, so too did testing of both water and wastewater. In the 1940’s wastewater was used to track polio outbreaks in the USA. Wastewater is valuable for virus detection because the virus is shed through our digestive tracts. Our fecal waste includes shed virus that contains RNA, a messenger, responsible for turning genetic information into proteins. Virus travels through sewage and the RNA can be detected once extracted from wastewater. When SARS-CoV-2, known as COVID-19, began circulating in Canada, wastewater was suggested for testing as it is unbiased, inclusive, and comprehensive. It is also a cost-effective way to track viruses as it can encompass a large population as apposed to single tests per patient burdening health care systems. Our bodies shed the virus in our fecal matter before we develop symptoms, making it an early warning system. Wastewater testing can be used to predict outbreaks up to six (6) days ahead of illness and hospitalizations. Thus, helping communities plan and prepare for testing and possible quarantine. Here in Calgary, researchers with the University of Calgary began discussions with the City in May 2020 to test our wastewater for COVID-19. By the Fall of 2020 researchers began gathering samples at all three (3) wastewater treatment plants. Barbara Waddell, Lab Manager & Research Technician with University of Calgary - Health Sciences Centre explains that samples are taken from the effluent (pre-treated wastewater) using the 4S RNA extraction protocol. The ACWA Lab at Pine Creek WWTP facility uses silica columns for extracting RNA for testing using RT-q-PCR, Reverse Transcriptase Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, which typically only takes hours. Within a 24-hour period, this information is shared with Alberta Health Services (AHS) for assessment and a targeted approach for action. Calgary is in a fortunate position that testing is not heavily impacted by weather events like rains and snow melts as the sewage and stormwater systems are separate. Thus, researchers receive accurate virus load counts. Currently, across Alberta, samples are taken from 19 plants and represent 27 communities. This monitoring represents approximately 75% of the province’s population. While COVID-19 was the catalyst for testing wastewater, when this virus transitions towards being endemic, it is hoped that testing will continue. Researchers see wastewater as an excellent source of knowledge about the health of communities, and the natural transition will be to track other viruses like RSV, Influenza, Para-influenza, Rhino virus and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Scientific advancements are continually being made with the hope that future outbreaks of infectious diseases can be caught early and prevent illness from overwhelming health systems. While we will continue to distance ourselves from our waste, its value can not be ignored. Unfortunately, with this population increase came an increase of untreated human waste that caused outbreaks of cholera, diphtheria, and typhoid fever in overcrowded urban tenements. Beginning in the 1870’s “sanitary reformers” including scholars, physicians and community members began advocating for waste management systems to improve both human health and economic prosperity. Before the building of sanitation sewers, in working-class neighbourhoods, toilets consisted of community privy pits (outhouses) in the backyard, and most houses had no facilities for bathing. When an outhouse was full it was either “cleaned out”, or the outhouse moved and the pit contents covered with dirt. The “night soil” was removed under the cover of darkness by night soil men usually with carts. It was dirty, unsanitary work but well-paid for its time. Unfortunately, most of the night soil was dumped into fresh water sources contaminating local drinking water. An early sanitary reformer was Dr. Edward Playter (1834 - 1909) a Toronto and Ottawa physician. He strongly believed in the promotion of health, and that practicing medicine included both the treatment of the sick and the prevention of sickness. He was the Founder/Editor of The Sanitary Journal, also known as the Canada Health Journal. Sir Herbert Brown Ames (1863 – 1954), was a businessman, politician, and philanthropist from Montreal. He used much of his inherited wealth to help the poor and fight corruption. In his 1897 book, The City Below the Hill: The Slums of Montreal, he reported more than half the homes in Sainte-Anne Ward still relied on “that relic of rural conditions, that insanitary abomination, the out-of-door-pit-in-the ground privy.” His eight-year campaign against pit privies in Montreal earned him the title, “Water Closet Ames.” In 1951, approximately 80% of raw sewage from across Canada was discharged directly into the country’s freshwater lakes, rivers, and surrounding oceans without being treated. As of 2020, this percentage has been reversed but with 20% of raw sewage still entering our waterways, work must continue so that all Canadians, no matter where they live, have access to sanitation services. The Cloaca Maxima (literally translates to "the greatest sewer") is a covered sewer in Rome that was built between the Second and First centuries, BC. It is the largest and most advanced segment of the Roman sewage system that discharges into the Tiber River near Ponte Palatino. Parts of the Cloaca Maxima are still in use today. (1) One of the first research facilities, Lawrence Experiment Station (known now as Senator William X Wall Experiment Station) located in Lawrence, MA was established in 1887. Hiram Francis Mills was its first director and is known as the Father of American Sanitary Engineering. Its main mission was to develop practical methods to treat wastewater and is credited with some of the earliest experiments on the activated sludge process.  (2) The British Medical Journal conducted a poll in 2007 asking what was the most important medical milestone since 1840 (its inception date)? Those polled chose the introduction of clean water and sewage disposal – “the sanitary revolution”. Followed by antibiotics and anesthesia. (3) Sir John Harington of the United Kingdom is credited with the first flushing lavatory or water-closet (1596), which he named "Ajax". Unfortunately for Sir Harington, the name "Ajax" didn't stick, and to this day people in the UK will regularly say they are "going to the John" (the term "John" believed to be a derivative of the term "Jakes" that was also used for a toilet).  (4) The average person will spend three (3) years of their life on the toilet using 57 sheets of toilet paper per day. What Earth resource is approximately 4.5 billion years old, was only created once and we are still using that original resource today? WATER! The water on Earth is in a closed system, it changes form but does not disappear. The water cycle is constantly renewing itself; however, due to population growth, climate change, and pollution the cycle is being disrupted and stressed. Almost 97% of the water on earth is undrinkable, without a global conservation effort some parts of the planet could drain their freshwater aquifers dry as early as 2050. While it is possible to create small amounts of new water in a lab, we cannot produce large volumes at this time. When combining oxygen and hydrogen they release a lot of energy and if you are not careful, mass explosions. So how can we conserve water and keep both ourselves and our planet healthy. We can start with small, simple individual steps; shorter showers, barrels to collect rainwater to water our gardens/yards, don’t run water while brushing your teeth, purchasing water efficient appliances, and maybe most importantly, fixing water leaks. A leaky faucet can waste up to 300 litres of water a year! On a larger scale, demanding better protection of our watersheds, incorporating equipment systems like biological nutrient removal, tertiary filtration, and advanced oxidation to our treatment plants. Did you know the agricultural sector is one of the largest users of fresh water? Pollution runoff from this industry to our rivers and streams is from fertilizers and pesticides. We must support our agricultural industry with cost effective treatment processes to stop these contaminants from entering our waterways. Without water, we cannot exist, we are inseparable. It is up to all of us to work together to be champions of clean water, demand protections and innovations so future generations can flourish as previous generations have. The biomass grows on the outer surface of the MABR strands and receives it’s oxygen from the air flowing on the inside of the hollow tubes. This form of aeration is much more efficient than conventional diffused aeration, leading up to 75% less energy consumption for the same amount of treatment. Being a fixed film technology, the MABR also benefits from greater resiliency, and up to a 50% reduction in waste biomass production. The drop in Oxymem MABR module can increase the amount of wastewater that can be treated within an existing conventional activated sludge system, thereby extending the life and capacity of a municipality’s existing infrastructure. It consists of a motor drive, a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a flexible program of speed variation designed for individual treatment plants. If power to the unit is stopped due to outage or interruption, the motor disengages the gearing, allowing the unit to spin hydraulically until power is restored. World Water Works - Ideal MBBR™ and Ideal IFAS™The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) process is an innovative fixed film (attached growth) biological process. MBBR allows for an extremely small biological system footprint which is robust and easy to maintain. Bacteria grow and thrive on specially designed bio-media with a maximized surface area. These bacteria digest and convert soluble material to biomass which can then be removed downstream using a WWW dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit. Both Aquafy’s dry and emulsion polymer systems use high shear mixing technology that provides the most effective polymer dispersion on the market. Kiel Pedersen began his full time position after graduating from U Ottawa. The entire team made the trip to New Orleans for WEFTEC.
