The City of Kimberley is developing a new wastewater treatment facility that will incorporate AquaNereda® aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology and AquaDisk® cloth media filtration from Aqua-Aerobic Systems.

Waste’n WaterTech is proud to support the project as Aqua-Aerobic Systems’ representative in Western Canada.

The new facility will replace Kimberley’s existing Pollution Control Centre and is intended to provide modern wastewater treatment infrastructure for the community’s future needs. The treatment process combines advanced biological treatment with tertiary filtration to support the production of high-quality effluent.

Aerobic Granular Sludge Treatment

AquaNereda® AGS technology uses naturally occurring microorganisms that form dense biological granules within the treatment process. Different conditions exist within each granule, allowing multiple biological treatment mechanisms to occur simultaneously. This supports the removal of organic matter and nutrients within a single reactor system.

Unlike conventional activated sludge systems, treatment and settling occur in the same reactor, eliminating the need for separate secondary clarifiers and return activated sludge pumping. This approach can reduce facility footprint and simplify plant configuration while maintaining effective treatment performance. Actual performance depends on facility-specific design and operating conditions.

Cloth Media Filtration

Following biological treatment, AquaDisk® cloth media filtration provides a final polishing step. The system uses OptiFiber® pile cloth media to remove remaining suspended solids from the treated effluent. This process can also contribute to phosphorus reduction by capturing particle-associated phosphorus.

The vertically oriented filter disks provide a large filtration area within a compact footprint. Automatic backwashing cleans the media while filtration remains in service, supporting continuous operation. The design also incorporates removable cloth segments to facilitate maintenance activities.

Building for Kimberley’s Future

Together, AGS and cloth media filtration provide complementary stages of treatment, combining biological treatment with final effluent filtration. The equipment package includes commissioning support and operator training to assist the City with start-up and long-term operation of the new systems. With the facility projected to become operational in 2028, this investment represents an important step toward reliable wastewater treatment and long-term environmental stewardship.
